Reach 4 Rangelands

Reach 4 Rangelands

An Overview

Phase 1 of this project has seen LANCCI with support from Global Greengrants Fund restore degraded pastoral landscapes across Laikipia North's drylands. The programme focuses on restoring ecological resilience, improving pasture regeneration, conserving water, and strengthening community stewardship systems.

Field Activities

01. Restoring Degraded Rangelands in Laikipia North

Through the REACH Program (Restore, Enhance and Champion for the Healing of Rangelands), LANCCI, with support from Global Greengrants Fund, is restoring degraded pastoral landscapes across Kurum, Tool, and Loishimi villages in Laikipia North. The initiative focuses on restoring over 15 hectares of degraded land through community-led restoration approaches that improve pasture regeneration, conserve water, and reduce soil erosion. As part of the restoration process, communities constructed over 800 semi-circular bunds and reseeded indigenous grass species including Maasai Love Grass and African Foxtail. These restoration techniques help retain water, improve soil health, and regenerate grazing areas for livestock.

Impacts & Outcomes

Regeneration of grasslands across degraded rangelands.

Increased availability of pasture for livestock in most bare lands in Laikipia North.

Improved soil and water conservation through sustainable land restoration practices.

Engagement of over 1,000 community members in restoration activities.

Inclusive participation involving women, youth, men, and persons living with disabilities.
