Knowledge Systems, Research & Transformative Learning

The Challenge

In many Indigenous and pastoral landscapes, knowledge exists in deep, lived experience — in how elders read seasons, how herders move with rainfall patterns, and how communities manage land and water through tradition. However, this knowledge is often undocumented, undervalued, or separated from formal research and policy systems. At the same time, many external studies and projects are designed without fully capturing local realities, leading to gaps between evidence and practice. This disconnect weakens decision-making, limits learning across landscapes, and reduces the effectiveness of conservation and development efforts.

Why It Matters

When knowledge is incomplete or disconnected from lived experience, decisions about land, water, and ecosystems become less effective. But when Indigenous knowledge, scientific research, and community learning are connected, they create stronger, more grounded solutions that actually work in real landscapes. Knowledge is not just information — it is power, direction, and continuity for future generations.

What We Do

We work to bring together Indigenous knowledge systems, community experience, and applied research to guide better decisions across landscapes. We support learning processes that are rooted in community realities, while also building evidence that can influence policy, planning, and action at different levels. Our focus is on ensuring knowledge is not extracted, but shared, strengthened, and returned to the communities who generate it.

How We Work

01

Conducting participatory action research with communities.

02

Documenting Indigenous and local ecological knowledge systems.

03

Supporting climate and rangeland monitoring led by communities.

04

Generating evidence to inform policy and landscape governance.

05

Creating community learning platforms and knowledge exchanges.

06

Building partnerships with youth, researchers, and academic institutions.

What We Aim to Achieve

We envision living knowledge systems where Indigenous wisdom and scientific research work together — guiding decisions, strengthening resilience, and ensuring that learning remains rooted in the landscapes and communities that sustain it.
