Conservation landscapes of Laikipia North

From a grassroots idea to a community movement.

Est. 2019 · Laikipia North, Kenya · 13 community lands

Milestones

LANCCI was initiated with a clear mandate: to champion the protection and conservation of both flora and fauna, sensitize communities on effective and sustainable land use practices, and fast-track community conservation progress for current and future generations.

Formally registered under the Ministry of Labour and Social Services as a Community-Based Organisation, giving LANCCI legal standing to operate, receive funding, and enter formal partnerships with structured governance in place.

Began sensitizing community members on biodiversity protection through scientific and traditional ecological knowledge. Launched the beehive programme to empower vulnerable pastoralist families and revitalize indigenous beekeeping techniques.

Introduced circular bunds to reduce water loss and soil erosion. Planted over 1,000 indigenous trees through a school programme reaching 7 primary and secondary schools across Laikipia North, restoring 15+ hectares of degraded land.

In 2025 LANCCI transitted into a Company Limited by Guarantee according to Kenya Constitution in order to meet the need to Continuing to expand its thematic pillars and cover other geographical areas in Northern Kenya.

Bernard Loolasho

Founder & Executive Director

“Pastoral habitats hold a special place in my heart. They nourish our livestock, nurture wildlife and sustain life. I seek to protect these ecosystems so they can support communities now and in the years to come.”

Leadership philosophy

Bernard's vision combines traditional pastoral knowledge with modern conservation science, creating sustainable solutions that benefit both communities and ecosystems. His approach puts indigenous people and local communities at the centre of every conservation decision.
